Spiritsong: Tale of Five Tribes
About the Board Game
In Spiritsong, players take on the roles of people from five tribes who must defend their home island from an invading robot empire. The tribes call upon the power of nature spirits and the environment to fend off the invaders. Most importantly, they must learn to put their differences aside and stand together in defense of their homeland.
Role
Created game logo, tribe symbols, enemy symbols, card layouts, card back designs, and rulebook layout. Consulted on layout and typography choices through gameplay elements.
Card Layouts
For the card layouts, I created the layouts themselves, choosing typography and the design elements with the requirements for print production in mind. The final designs were illustrated by the game directors.
I illustrated the symbol used by the enemy faction that’s seen on the the back of the enemy cards. Other elements on the card backings were designed by the directors.
Icon Designs
The directors created five symbols to represent the tribes of the land, but they handed them to me to further develop them. I redesigned the icons to better represent both the element of the tribe and their land.
Logo Design
I designed a logo to be used for the game, choosing typography and the overall design. The game directors wanted it to be stylized and textured to fit the game, so the co-director Justin Leung took my initial design and illustrated over it. I helped direct the overall final look, like choosing colors and tweaking the letterforms, while Justin illustrated it.
